2015 Lenten Sermons – On Confession
3rd Sunday of Lent
The Acts of the Penitent, Contrition
given by Canon Olivier Meney
St Margaret Mary Church in Oakland, CA
One of the true joys of the Season of Lent is the common following of the Stations of the Cross. There is hardly a parish that doesn’t have a Friday night devotion of this type during Lent!
The Way of the Cross is a privileged way of entering into the Passion and Death of Our Lord. The Church attaches a plenary indulgence to it whenever it is made by moving from station to station at duly erected Stations. The Franciscans are charged with “duly erecting” the Stations throughout the Church because of their custody of the Holy Land and because St. Francis of Assisi invented the devotion. In the sacristy of every church is a “Decretum Erectionis” signed by a Franciscan for the Stations in that church. Thus, the Stations take us on pilgrimage to the Holy Land and into the heart of St. Francis.
We were blessed to have the presence of the Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, SJ, Bishop of Oakland, at St. Margaret Mary’s for the launching of the diocese’s Reclaiming Christ’s Mission Together Campaign on March 6, 2015. This special endeavor aims to strengthen and stabilize the diocese’s long-term financial footing, increase funding for parish projects and needs, and demonstrate sound stewardship over the gifts the diocese has already received. Both Fr. Rafal Duda (Parochial Administrator of St. Margaret Mary’s) and Canon Olivier Meney (Episcopal Delegate for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the Diocese of Oakland) were also there to welcome the bishop. More information on the campaign can be found on the website: http://reclaimtogether.org. Click on the photo for the picture gallery of this special event.

Every Wednesday (starting this Wednesday, March 4, 2015), after the 6pm Low Mass at St. Margaret Mary’s (Oakland, CA), there will be a special adoration to be led by Canon Meney, in reparation for the evil atrocities committed by ISIS against our Christian brethen in the Middle East.
