The Sub-diaconate
In the first two parts of this series, we have seen how the Church disposes her seminarians for the grace of the holy priesthood through the reception of four minor orders: that is, the orders of porter, lector, exorcist, and acolyte. Now we will turn our attention to the major or sacred orders.
In the ordination of acolytes, there is already a foretaste of the major orders, since the acolyte, by his function, is designated to assist the sacred ministers in the liturgical functions of the holy sacrifice of the Mass. However, the sub-deacon is given an even greater role. As his name suggests, he is the servant of the deacon at the altar. This aspect of the sub-diaconate is represented by the manner in which the sub-deacon presents the chalice and the cruets at the offertory. The deacon pours the wine into the chalice and the sub-deacon pours the water. Also, while the deacon chants the holy Gospel, it is the sub-deacon who holds the book for him. Furthermore, during the Mass the sub-deacon never sits nor covers his head while the deacon fulfills his liturgical functions.
The sub-deacon chants the books of the prophets and the epistles, which are preparations for the highest doctrine of the Gospel. This is one reason why the sub-deacon holds the paten with the humeral veil before his face during the Canon. He represents the Old Testament, in which the fullness of Christ’s glory was still veiled and no one could look upon the face of God and live (e.g. Exodus 33:12-22).
The sub-deacon is thus the servant of the servants of God (the word deacon in Greek means “servant”). In this, he ought to imitate the humility of Our Lord Jesus Christ, who said to his apostles: “I am in the midst of you as one who serves” (St Luke 22:27).
The Church calls upon the sub-deacon to unite the virtue of humility to a perfect chastity. Before his ordination, the Bishop warns him that, whereas before he had been free to leave the clerical state, now he will make a permanent commitment to clerical celibacy. He also takes on the obligation of reciting the entire office. The prayer of the office both glorifies God and gives the sub-deacon the graces necessary to fulfill his sacred duties.
Here at St. Margaret Mary’s Church, we have our own sub-deacon, Abbé Kevin, who fulfills beautifully this role of servant of the servants of God. Let’s keep him in our prayers and thank God for the grace of his vocation among us!

Peter Carota who died last July 8, 2016. So far, one Requiem Mass in the EF was already celebrated on the evening of Father’s passing at St. Catherine of Siena (Phoenix, AZ), of which a video is available for viewing at Sancta Missa’s YouTube page. Around 40+ girls and boys had the joy of receiving our Lord Jesus Christ for the first time last Saturday (May 7, 2016), during a Solemn High Mass celebrated at St. Stephen the First Martyr parish in Sacramento, CA (an apostolate parish of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter or FSSP). It was a full day for us last Saturday (Jan. 23, 2016), as we started the day getting organized for the Walk For Life Info Faire at Civic Center Plaza. This is what we’ve been doing for the past couple of years before the Walk For Life Program, where we display and distribute materials, flyers, brochures on the Traditional Latin Mass, along with 50 other vendors (ranging from pro-life pregnancy clinics to Diocesan and religious communities). We also volunteered to take photos of our fellow vendors at the Info Faire. We started to pack our display when the program started, which included an impressive line up of speakers such as Obianuju Ekeocha of Culture of Life Africa, Mexican musical superstar and pro-life activist Emmanuel, and also David Daleiden of the Center for Medical Progress (well known for his undercover videos on Planned Parenthood’s selling of body parts of aborted babies). Inspite of the rainy weather at the onstart of the Walk (it eventually stopped), it didn’t prevent several thousands of pro-lifers from filling up the streets of downtown San Francisco! It was also edifying to see various Traditional Latin Mass communities (specially the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter and this year, the participation of more than 500 people from the Society of St. Pius X, where the Superior General, Bishop Bernard Fellay was present); walking side by side for the sanctity of life! After the Walk, we proceeded to the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi for a Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form that was celebrated by Fr. Anthony M., OFM Conv., with assistance of Fr. Zachary Akers, FSSP, and Fr. Ashley Perry from St. Stephen’s. Music was provided by the St Ann Choir of Palo Alto and directed by Prof. William Mahrt. We will be uploading shortly the video of Fr. Anthony’s sermon.

Last Sunday (Sunday in the Octave of Christmas) we revisited the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter’s (FSSP) Latin Mass community of St. Stephen the First Martyr Parish in Sacramento, CA. Here are some photos taken from the High Mass that was celebrated by Fr. Ashley Perry, Parochial Vicar. If you ever get to visit the parish, be sure to also check out their wonderful bookstore; located by the entrance of the courtyard leading to the church. One can find an abundant treasure of rosaries, missals, bibles, assorted Catholic books, First Holy Communion gifts, and a whole lot more!
We are excited to share with you this special event, organized by our friends from the Fresno Traditional Latin Mass Society. Fr. John Berg, Superior General of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP), will be offering a Traditional Latin Mass on Sunday, November 15, at 3:30pm at St. Anthony of Padua Church (5770 N. Maroa, Fresno, CA). Following the mass will be a reception dinner at the Social Hall where Fr. Berg will be speaking about “The Traditional Mass and the Family”.
